I saw the band dozens of times beginning in the 60's. I recorded the band once (Boston Music Hall May 3, 1980 1st show)from the audience. To this day, I have never heard a better performance from this band. It's 110 minutes of shock and awe. Zappa comes out blasting and does not let up- not once. Frank's work at the bottom of the neck is as powerful as any guitar work I've ever heard. Tommy Mars is positively on fire.

I am dying to share this recording with other Zappa fans. It's an audience recording, but an excellent one with only one interruption when I flipped then cassette. Incidentally, during the show someone who said he was from the sound crew came up to the loge and I thought I was sunk, busted. All he did was ask me about my opinion of the sound quality. I said, "Great." He said, "I'm glad to hear it."

Soundboards are great, but they dampen the "live" experience. When I put on headphones and crank it up a bit, I am there. Shock and awe!Hollymonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07104505723417537206noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5078908796780927861.post-41137902237131617132017-07-03T16:02:56.952-05:002017-07-03T16:02:56.952-05:00I have Been a Zappa fan for over thirty years, I r...I have Been a Zappa fan for over thirty years, I remember the original releases of what became the "Beat The boots" series, those were some great bootlegs compared to what else was available at the time.
I'm conflicted on the subject of bootlegging because A: yes, it is stealing. If you don't own the rights to those songs you shouldn't be profiting from them.
But B: I'm a fan, and as a fan I own much of Zappa's official cattle log. But I want more. The bootlegger provides that.
There are two bands that I will never buy a bootleg from. the Grateful Dead and Phish. Both bands allow their fans to record shows. They give you free access so real fans will only trade for copies.
It seems that other artists are just getting hip to what the Dead have known for a long time. Fans want complete shows and they want them without all of the mistakes fixed.
Bootlegs provide that.
It's been a long time since I've bought a Zappa boot. Mainly becaue of the good stuff that the Zappa Family trust is putting out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
